Chapter Ten
âIâm sorry.â Sully looked down at his mug and then up at Q. The manâs dark blue eyes hadnât left him since heâd got out of Lathamâs office. âNot an auspicious start to our relationship.â
âRelationships arenât only about the good times or the sexy times,â Q said quietly. âIâd be a piss-poor partner if I ran off at the first sign of trouble.â
âYeah, and I know you wouldnât do that.â Sullyâs head was a mess. He knew how important being focused on the job was; especially in SWAT. One momentâs inattention could be dangerous for everyone concerned. He thought back over his last engagement. Yes, heâd been thinking about Q, but not while he was at the scene. In fact, heâd made a point of not thinking about the delicious looking man. The more Sully thought about his actions the surer he was he didnât put a foot wrong. âItâs a real mess. I donât know how much you heard, but I didnât fuck up on the job. I didnât.â
âItâs okay.â Q reached out and covered his hand; Sullyâs shoulders slumped; something a small part of his brain registered as weird. After spending years hiding who he was; to be essentially holding hands with another man at a local diner, three blocks from the precinct, Sully found he didnât care. He hadnât seduced Q because he wanted to scratch an itch. He wasnât going to ignore his new partner in public.
âI donât know what to do,â Sully confessed. âIf I quit now thenâ¦.â
âYour coworkers will assume youâre running scared.â Q nodded and then sat back as the waitress came with their meals. Her eyes widened as she took in Qâs huge frame and their joined hands.
âThank you for your service,â she said to Q, putting their plates on the table.
âHow did you know my friendâs in the armed forces?â Sully figured in his plain clothes Q could pass for anything from an assassin to a biker, especially with his tattoos on full display.
âBoy, I bet your man screams Marine when heâs naked,â the waitress winked. âEnjoy your meal.â
Sully chuckled as the waitress walked away. The splash of color on Qâs cheeks made him look younger, but he didnât say a word, simply picking up his knife and fork and enjoying the food while it was hot.
Quit or stay; quit or stay. No matter how much he weighed things up, Sully couldnât think of a way to keep his reputation, his mate, and his job. The logical thing would be to quit. He had Q now; they could build a life together once Q signed his papers. If it hadnât been for Gibsonâs comments the day before, and Lathamâs earlier, heâd have written the letter already.
âWhat do you know about ranching?â Q asked, placing his knife and fork neatly on his plate and then pushing them aside.
âErâ¦nothing. I can ride a horse, but Iâve lived in cities all my life,â Sully was so caught up in the merry-go-round in his head he almost missed the question.
